Shunti Kashaya is a soothing drink which can be had during cold, cough, flu and body pain. My dad takes this three times a day for 3 days whenever he gets cold, cough and flu or any one of these. It works wonders for him. Even I don’t prefer going to doctor for common colds and body aches. But however in case of viral fever I take this Kashaya along with the medicines prescribed by doctor. It’s so soothing for the throat and also reduces the body pain.
The three main ingredients ginger, honey and lemon used in this recipe have various health benefits and the combination of these ingredients is perfect for cold, cough, throat irritation, flu and body pain.
I am actually suffering from cold and flu due to change in climate and I am having this kashaya along with my medicines and thought this might be useful for many suffering from cold and flu due to rapid climate changes. Try this drink and see how it works wonders!!!!
Preparation time: 2 minutes Cooking time: 15 to 20 minutes Author: Anusha Acharya Recipe Type: Health drink Cuisine: Indian Servings: 2 1 Cup = 250 ml
Ingredients:
Shunti/ Adarak/ Ginger – 1 ½ Inches (2 ½ teaspoons when chopped)
Jenu Thuppa/ Shahad/ Honey – 1 teaspoon (½ teaspoon per serving)
Nimbe rasa/ Nimboo ka ras/ Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon (1/2 teaspoon per serving)
Neeru/ Paani/ Water – 2 cups
Preparations:
Peel required ginger, chop it finely and keep it aside.
Making Shunti kashaya:
Step 1: Take finely chopped ginger and 2 cups of water in a pan or vessel. Boil it until the quantity of water is reduced to 1 cup. (It took 15 minutes for me).
Step 2: Strain it into a container or vessel.
Serving Shunti kashaya:
Take ½ cup of prepared hot kashaya in a cup, add ½ teaspoon of honey and lemon juice each and mix well. Have it when hot.
Note:
*This kashaya can be prepared in more quantity (quantity required for whole day) and stored. Just heat the required amount of kashaya. Add honey and lemon and serve it.
* Don’t heat after adding honey and lemon.
*I prefer chopping ginger than grating it. Grating ginger makes the kashaya stronger.

Growing up in Canada, we always had lemon and honey to sooth our sore throats. I’ve started using more ginger as an adult for its healing properties but it makes good sense to combine them all. Thanks for posting this!

Can we give this to small kids like a year old – if they have cold.

Yes, If you have already started giving honey to your kid you can definitely give it in a small quantity..may be 1 teaspoon..But never skip doctor prescribed medicine….
